Nicholas of Cusa was born here in Kues on the Moselle River in 1401 and undoubtedly ranks among the greatest figures in Western intellectual history. His birthplace at Nikolausufer 49 is a place of peace and reflection. Even from afar, a large flag on the facade greets visitors to the house on the Kues side of Bernkastel-Kues.
Within these walls grew up the world-famous philosopher, mystic, mathematician, and later cardinal. His work marks the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Cusanus was a visionary who, as early as the 15th century, contemplated the infinity of space and championed interreligious dialogue. The house itself is today an important research center and museum that impressively documents the life and work of this universal genius.
